Of all the ghosts the ghosts of our old loves are the worst. Arthur Conan Doyle

I actually wanted to name this post “Curse of the forgotten” and then I remembered the movie title “Ghost of the Girlfriends past” and thought it fit well.

Before I dwell on the completely fictional thesis I have made up, I would like to present some theories first. In many cultures, it is believed that curses and negative auras can damage another person it is set upon – physically, mentally, or psychologically. And partly I believe it too as I cannot completely ignore the obvious coincidences that have occurred multiple times in my life. So, here I set up the assumption before we begin the narrative.

Once upon a time there lived a girl in high spirits and enthusiasm who had recently discovered her freedom. She had wealth, time and power to take action and found a boy who appreciated her. They did all in their power to show their good sides , an undeniable phase of dating. Too much time and desperate measures led them together. She didn’t know then that she fell for the idea of someone giving her attention than the person himself.

She was clever, and accomplished but never expressive nor couldn’t articulate well. He came with years of experience and previous failed relationships that taught him what he wanted but she didn’t know as it was her first. The same reasons that they liked in each other in the first place ended up being the reasons to hate. He talked, she listened. He controlled, she submitted. He forced, and she obliged. He intimidated her to express, she struggled. But that day came when the bubble burst on them finally realising they were not meant to be. Thus he became her lesson – better yet he was her failed experience that taught her what to expect and what she wanted. Finally, she was wise.

Couple of years later, she found another man pure in heart old enough to have a bunch of heartbreaks but had none. He was reserved and yet content surviving in his little shell. He was exactly as she was before she became wiser. Now she had loads to say and he merely a line. She knew the irony and wondered if karma just came back to bite her. Was it karma or the curse of her old love?
