Surprise

“What do you mean I didn’t do anything for your birthday?”, he groaned.

“No. I didn’t say that. I said you didn’t do anything nice for me.” she said flipping her hair to the side and taking off her necklace.

“Didn’t I take you to your favorite Italian place in SoHo? Didn’t I take you shopping last week? I thought you loved that.” he said raising his eyebrow as he sat down on the bed looking at her.

“Well, I do love that Italian place and of course, I loved the dress because I picked the dress from the store.”

“I don’t understand. I thought you were happy with all the things I did for you”

“I really appreciate it and I am grateful that you go to lengths to provide for me well. But that is not what I wanted”

“What did you really want then?” he sat up with curiosity.

“You.” she smiled. “A piece of you. Your time.”

“You don’t think we spend enough time together? Don’t I come back from work and sit together with you and watch TV every day.”

“Oh! So tell me what do you think I do all day?”

“Uhm.. Cook and watch TV I guess?” he looked puzzled.

“You guess!” she smirked.

“Babe! Just get to the point. What are you expecting me to do for your birthday?” he asked.

“Do you know what color I like? Do you know the things I really covet? Did you ever care to ask me what I’m passionate about? You didn’t.” she breathed hard.

“All you have is a rule book. You thought taking your wife to a fancy restaurant, or shopping, or a trip would do the job. But truly all I need is you and your time. And it’s not just allocating your time on my birthday. I wanted your time every day. I wanted you to have excited about my birthday a month or a week before and wreak your brains trying to find the right gift. For that, I wanted you to have known me well. I wanted you to have spent time understanding me. My life, my past, my future. I wanted a surprise.” she said as her voice fainted away staring at the mirror woolgathering.
